Bakken (US) - Unconventional well
Welltec partnered with a US-based independent oil & gas operator to evaluate PipeSnake Flow Through (FT) Coiled Tubing Tractor as a conveyance solution in an unconventional well in the Bakken formation. The operation sought to demonstrate the speed and force required to convey CT in the lateral section of the well.
PipeSnake FT was selected to overcome CT reach limitations caused by friction, lock-up, and “boggling” – mechanical instability or erratic CT movement that can often present challenges.
PipeSnake FT has a short, modular design that is adaptable to multiple tubing sizes, while high-flow, front-vented propulsion and rotational capability stabilize the string and extend reach. By combining high pulling force with efficient debris management, PipeSnake FT provides a versatile and streamlined solution for extended-reach clean-out and conveyance challenges.
Prior to deployment, crossovers and the bottomhole assembly (BHA) were verified with the CT provider, and a surface integration test established flow rate and circulating pressure parameters. The assembled tool string consisted of 2-3/8” CT, a 2-7/8” motor, and the PipeSnake 2-7/8” FT.
During tractoring, pulling forces consistently reached ~6,000 lbf, with peak values of 8,000–8,500 lbf recorded across shorter intervals. These results demonstrated the tool’s capacity to generate significant axial force under operational conditions.
