First-ever geothermal deployment of the Welltec Light Packer (WLP)

Customized 12-1/4” WLP for high-temp (150–200°C), large-hole cement assurance
Geothermal innovator, Eavor, has enlisted the support of Welltec® to deliver a specialized cement assurance solution for its flagship geothermal project in Germany: Eavor-Loop™. The collaboration represents the first-ever application of a Welltec Light Packer (WLP) in a geothermal setting.
Eavor (pronounced “Ever”) uses a closed-loop design where two parallel wells are connected by ten sidetracks, circulating water to harness subsurface heat for power generation and heating networks.
Cement plays a crucial role in guiding directional drilling for each sidetrack. With complex specifications including high well temperatures (150–200°C) and high degree of expansion required from a 9 5/8" casing inside a potential 14” open hole, a 12-1/4” WLP provides a reliable cement assurance and zonal isolation in the form of a metal expandable packer.

Prior New Energy segment applications of Welltec’s products and services span both intervention and completion solutions, the latter of which includes revitalizing geothermal wells in the Philippines by installing 12-1/4” WABs in high MW geothermal producer wells for the purpose of relining.
The aim now is to support Eavor with a more efficient and resilient drilling process, both throughout this project and into the future.
