Closing Sliding Sleeve
November 2005
The well was completed with 3 hydraulic valves and 2 mechanical valves. In one zone of the well, a 5 ½” sliding sleeve needed to be closed in order to allow for opening of another zone.
The Well Key was engaged and latched in the sliding sleeve at 14,220 ft depth and stroked up one time. A small pressure increase was observed, suggesting the sleeve had closed. In order to verify the closed position of the sliding sleeve a new upstroke was performed. The well was bleed down 3 bars, which indicated that the sleeve was closed.
Total time in well was 13 hours while the actual time to close the sliding sleeve was a mere 15 minutes.
Achievements
Logistical advances were achieved by using the Well Tractor versus traditional and more comprehensive methods. In addition, the operation allowed a drilling operation at the opposite shaft to be carried out simultaneously. Furthermore, heavy lifts were eliminated and the job required less people on deck.
Applying the Well Tractor instead of coiled tubing saved the operator 4 ½ days, while cost savings amounted to approximately $600,000.
