Retrieving LWD Radioactive Source

February 2001

While running in with a new BHA (Bottom Hole Assembly), the bit suddenly became stuck. The driller was not able to move the string up, down or enable any rotation and circulation was eventually lost. Several attempts were made to free the drill string, but it remained stuck. After 100 jarring cycles, it was decided to attempt a fishing operation using the Well Tractor.

The radioactive source was to be retrieved and the string backed off below the jar. This would facilitate a fishing string to be run with a wash over pipe. Due to the fact that the BHA was located in the horizontal section of the well and no circulation was possible, the fishing tool could not be pumped down. Instead, the operator decided to apply the Well Tractor 218 to push the fishing tool down.

Achievements

Welltec successfully retrieved the source in one run. The LINC tool was deployed on the Well Tractor, which enabled the radioactive source to be retrieved. Full compatibility between the retrieval tool and the Well Tractor was proven and demonstrated.

This operation not only contributed to major cost savings for the operator but also furthered its efforts to protect the environment.
