Zonal Isolation in U-Shaped Well
September 2003
In a highly deviated section in the toe of a well, a straddle packer assembly needed to be installed to isolate several intervals in order to reduce the gas to oil ratio (GOR). The straddle packer assembly was custom-designed by Welltec. To perform the operation, it was decided to run the CT Well Tractor in a tandem configuration due to high well deviation.
The operation was an unqualified success, reducing GOR from 3,000 to 1,600 Sm 3/Sm3, while boosting oil production to 1,500 Sm3/D. The increased production returned investment within 35 days. Basically, there was no alternative to the operation, as other conventional methods could not have reached the desired depth; they would have locked up 570 ft away from the target.
Furthermore, the operation eliminated the need for heavy lift requirements.
