Acid Stimulation in Open Hole
The Coiled Tubing (CT) Well Tractor was used to access a horizontal open hole extended reach power water injector (PWI) well in one of the world’s largest fields.
The operation was to perform a huge matrix acid stimulation job. The volume of the treatment was considered one of the largest for a PWI and was also the first utilization of a CT Well Tractor in that field.
Review of recent technology advancements to access long horizontal wells, concluded that the CT Well Tractor would be the best option for reaching MD to displace the treatment fluids. Due to the significant volume of the treatment, a total of 231,000 gal of 20% HCL systems and 17,500 gal of inert fluids were needed on location.
This intervention lasted for 7 days and involved around the clock operations.
Achievements
Following the successful acid treatment, the well was put back on injection and the injection potential was effectively enhanced by more than twofold; the rate increased from 13,000 to 28,000 BWPD. Using the CT Well Tractor increased the reach of the CT in this well by 54 %; the job also evidenced that the force of the CT pushing the CT Well Tractor can help it pass through long washouts.
