R
Ram
A powerful closing device in the blowout control system. It is a hydraulically operated valve that is able to close the valve quickly.
Rate of penetration (ROP)
The speed when drilling through the sub soil. ROP is measured in meters or feet an hour.
Recoverable reserves
The part of oil or gas deposits that within reasonable time can be extracted with the available technology.
Relief valve
A valve that opens if pressure exceeds the allowed. This prevents the system or container from bursting.
Relief well
A well that is drilled in order to loosen the pressure in the subsoil and bring a blowout under control.
Rental payment
The amount an oil company has to pay the state to keep the concession right.
Reservoir
A term describing the spacious field in the subsoil where oil and gas are found.
Reservoir pressure
The underground pressure in the field.
Rig
Platform at the sea.
Rig up
Preparing. When equipment and personnel are transported to the platform and everything is prepared for drilling.
Riser
A heavy pipe construction connecting the platform with the well down at the sea or with an undersea pipeline. Mud, the drill string or the required pipes to lead the carbon hydrates to production platform are conveyed inside the pipe construction.
ROP
See Rate of penetration
Roller cone bit
The most common type of drill bit, which consists of three wheels with sharp teeth.
Rotameter
Measurement equipment used to measure the speed of a fluid or gas.
Rotary drilling
A type of drilling where both the drill string and the drill bit rotate – the opposite of turbine drilling.
Rotary RPM (rotations per minute)
The amount of rotations per minute of the drill pipe.
Round trip
Changing of the drill bit. Also see making a trip
Run in
To go into the hole
Run the tools
To lower drill pipes etc. into the well in order to continue drilling.
