Well Cutter for MECHANICAL SOLUTIONS

Background

The ability to increase safety and reduce time spent offshore made the Well Cutter® the preferred cutting method on a record operation in the North Sea. Upon removing the Christmas Tree and installing a riser & drilling blow out preventer, two cuts were planned inside the tubing in order to reduce the risk of pulling the tubing in one go through a casing restriction. The operator was familiar with the Well Cutter’s remarkable track record, which made them want to test if two cuts could be performed in the same run. After a successful test at Welltec’s facilities, where two clean cuts were performed in a 5.5″ 23# tubing, the operator was convinced.

OPERATION

During the offshore operations a Well Tractor® conveyed the Well Cutter deep in the well to 11,385 ft (3,470 m) MD depth. Here it performed a flawless cut above the geophones in order to reduce the OD of the lower tubing stump in case it would be necessary to pull out of hole. Without pulling out of hole, the second cut was then successfully performed at 15,617 ft (4,760 m) MD above the restriction point to assure the upper part of the tubing could be pulled. At surface the crew could confirm that there was no significant wear on the cutting pads, thus demonstrating the strength of the Well Cutter.

ACHIEVEMENTS

The operational time was reduced significantly by performing two cuts in one run. Several hours of rig time were saved since it was not necessary to change the pads on the Well Cutter for the second cut. Also the tool has the unique ability to cut under compression, which eliminated potential hazards associated with cutting the tubing under compression in an offshore environment and ensured that the operation was carried out in a safe and efficient manner. After this success the operator has recommended to apply the Well Cutter when a clean cut is required in a deviated well, especially when more than one cut is required in a tubing under compression.
