A custom solution based on a novel tool was suggested. Using Well Stroker concepts a new, larger tool was built to increase the pull force to 60,000 lbs. This operation marked the first field trial. On run one, the pulling tool latched onto the overshot and the Well Stroker XXS exerted 45,000 lbs of pull force. Upon retrieval it was discovered that the shear pins had been sheared and the overshot/pulling tool had released. On run two, the tool latched and the Well Stroker XXS pulled. A 350 lbs higher pick-up weight was noted and the tools could move up the well.
The setting tool was retrieved and it was confirmed that the setting process had been completed in run one, but due to the shock of shearing the stud, the pulling tool had slipped off. For run three, the toolstring was modified to pull the plug. An over pull of 9,000 lbs was noticed, and then dropped back to normal arm moving force, indicating a free plug. The tool hanging weight increased 100 lbs, confirming a successful operation. After 20 mins the toolstring was retrieved, giving the plug elements sufficient time to retract before pulling out.
The operation was completed in three runs with no misruns. The successful use of the Well Stroker XXS saved the operator from prolongued exposure to HSE risks including any well control situation. The operator was highly satisfied with the tool and the team’s adherence to the safety culture.
