E-LINE SOLUTION SAVES TWO DAYS DURING WELL COMPLETION

Welltec Annular Barrier for Completions Solutions

Background

A horizontal oil well in Canada was unfortunately drilled out of zone along the top of the target formation. This prevented the operator from running the planned, standard completion consisting entirely of multiple frac ports. Hence frac ports were utilized for the upper half of the lateral but left out of the lower half. The 4 ½” casing was cemented to TD and planned to be completed by adding perforations via e-line.

Due to a strong relationship, the operator turned to Welltec® to provide the complete solution of drifting and cleaning the wellbore post cementing and performing the e-line perforating. In Canada, Welltec operates its own fleet of full service e-line units in addition to providing the full portfolio of intervention solutions which are offered globally and conveyed via 3rd party e-line.

OPERATION

Over the course of the operation, eight runs were completed. First, the Well Tractor® was used to convey the Well Cleaner® RCB equipped with the expandable casing scraper bit as a drift / confirmation run. The RCB can mill through and recover internally any debris commonly left behind from the completion such as cement stringers. Following the clean-out, the Well Tractor was then used to deploy a cement bond tool to ensure cement integrity of the 4 ½” liner. Multiple passes were made including a pressure pass to check for microannulus.

Based upon the results of the bond log, perforation intervals were selected and over the next four runs the Well Tractor conveyed 15, select fire perforating guns down to the appropriate depths. Once perforating was completed, a final run of the RCB was made to PBTD in order to remove any burrs which may have been created from the perforating guns.

ACHIEVEMENTS

All the objectives were achieved effectively and efficiently utilizing Welltec’s full service package to convey, clean-out and complete this horizontal producer. Perfect service quality was delivered with zero NPT.

Compared to running the operation on CT, about two days of operating time were saved and no additional fluids were required to perform the clean-outs. The applied, integrated solution reduced logistics considerably as it was significantly smaller and lighter, with a much smaller footprint compared to a CT unit. This also reduces environmental impact and potentialr reduced HSE risks.
