Optimizing reservoir drainage is a highly skilled profession which requires years of experience, a coherent and consistent use of best-practice, but also the courage to challenge it.

This also implies the need for a flexible well design and reservoir characterization uncertainties are one of the main drivers behind this concept. The drainage approach is fine-tuned over the lifespan of the reservoir as the knowledge base of the behavior of the specific reservoir increases. The end goal is a significant increase in the ultimate recovery rates.
Optimization through well interventions has historically been considered cost prohibitive, particular in subsea wells; however, with the technology available today this picture has completely changed.
