Milling Iron Sulfide Scale on Wireline
Welltec has just completed an iron sulfide scale milling operation on wireline for a Canadian operator.
The operator had to perform well head maintenance in a well with high levels of H2S (28%), and ran in hole to set a retrievable bridge plug at 500 m. However, iron sulfide scale buildup in the well prevented the plug from reaching target depth. The formation was fluid sensitive which meant that alternative solutions involving the introduction of fluids to the well could affect the future production of the well.
Welltec was contacted by the client to remove the scale buildup from the tubing on wireline, as the Well Miller does not require any fluid to operate.
The Well Tractor and Well Miller were dispatched along with a set of four newly developed milling bits custom-made for this specific operation. The Well Tractor was used as weight on bit during the operation ensuring a controlled progress and the iron sulfide scale was removed from surface to a depth of 520 m clearing the way for the bridge plug.
The operation was a 100% success and the client was able to safely complete well head maintenance. The operation was completed in one day, with just one rig up on the well. After the milling operation to remove the scale, the operator used the same E-line unit to set the Bridge Plug, reducing costs and resulting in a small carbon footprint.
